In "A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope", Martin lays out the case for how the true heroes of the Star Wars saga were Artoo-Detoo and Chewbacca. You have to wonder: how, in a galaxy so big, do all of these characters keep running into each other? Well, this is the most plausible answer to that question that I've yet found, in addition to answering a few other issues.
Whether it came about by design or accident, I'm sort of inclined to agree with this theory, because Chewbacca and Artoo seemed to have always been George Lucas's favorite characters. Kinda makes sense that those two are the master link that keeps this entire story together.

Wow, I really like this guy's theories. It certainly puts a new spin on those two characters.
It also justifies those two speaking languages that the audience can't understand and the fact that Chewbacca didn't get a medal at the end of A New Hope (something that's always bugged).
This would probably break some kind of copyright law, but I've always thought it would be fun to re-edit the Star Wars trilogy with subtitles added for everything that R2-D2 and Chewbacca say. Through C3PO, we know approximately what R2-D2 is saying, but it'd be fun to know the exact words he uses. And I've always thought (until reading this guy's essay) that what Chewbacca was yelling at the end of A New Hope was, "Where's my medal, b---h!?!" ;)
