Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has "outed" Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School and Harry's principle mentor (yeah I know how weird it looks to read that).
Not only was Dumbledore a gay man, but he had an unrequieted love for Gellert Grindelwald: his one-time accomplice in an ill-spirited bid for conquest of the wizard world, before Dumbledore came to his senses and later defeated Grindelwald during World War II.
I honestly don't know what to make of this. It doesn't really take away from the enjoyment of the books themselves, because this was nothing that was ever, ever a part of the story. It could be like Ridley Scott insisting years later that Deckard was himself a Replicant in the movie Blade Runner, when there was nothing indicating that to be the case either. And looking back on the Harry Potter books, even Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I'm still not seeing any sexual undertones about Dumbledore at all.
Yet Rowling insists that Dumbledore is a homosexual...
Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character. The article also brings this up...
Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.Let's just hope that Rowling doesn't answer any questions about what Albus's brother Aberforth is doing with all those goats...
Funny you mention Aberforth. In the same interview an eight-year-old audience member, asked about Aberforth and the inappropriate charms on goat. Her response:
ReplyDelete"I think that he was trying to make a goat that was easy to keep clean [laughter], curly horns. That's a joke that works on a couple of levels. I really like Aberforth and his goats. But you know Aberforth having this strange fondness for goats if you've read book seven, came in really useful to Harry, later on, because a goat, a stag, you know. If you're a stupid Death Eater, what's the difference. So, that is my answer to YOU."
From her emphasis on 'you' at the end, I think this was a specific answer for the age-group present.
even though dubledore is a poofterchook hes still my fave charachater and aberfroth could have been kiwi if it were sheep and not goats lol but then harry could not escape then again harry looks sort of like a sheep ahhahaha
ReplyDeletedumbledore is homosexual? j.k.rowling spoiled it all by revealing a stupid phrase that damage all of hir books
ReplyDeleteshe must have been drunk or something to do so..i mean WTH was she thinking??!
ReplyDeleteit would have been much better if she pointed out this fact in any of the books, for an example, harry was in dumbledores office and it looked as it always did except for one thing, there was something that looked like a dildo in the middle of dumbledore's silver instruments, and when harry was about to touch it dumbledore said "hello harry my lov.. i mean.. my boy " .
ReplyDeleteyea that would have been much cooler
To Anonymous (who said "dumbledore is homosexual? j.k.rowling spoiled it all by revealing a stupid phrase that damage all of hir books"):
ReplyDeleteWhy would something like a character's sexual orientation spoil seven amazing books? Since his preferences has nothing to do with the story of the book, it does not spoil her remarkable story. If you think that such a silly thing like this destroys her work, I believe that you seriously should take some time and ponder whether you are a homophobe or not.
AMEN!
ReplyDeleteI knew it!
ReplyDeletereading the last 2 books especially I thought over and over again that dumbledore was probably in love with Grindelwald, if not his whole life, then atleast when he was young... This doesn't surprise me at all, and I think it gives even more value to Rowlings books; she includes all peoples, of all creeds, values and orientations and she doesnt judge them... all of her characters have multiple levels, just like real people... I think it is lovely, and Dumbledore is my favourite character along with Snape
Its all good. Whether Dumbledore is gay or not,has no effect on the great things he did, value of things he taught Harry etc Although it came as a shock (bcoz there were no solid clues), it really doesn't change anything. Though i'm wondering if Grindelwald was his *only* love :-))
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I enjoy the fact that Dumbledore is homosexual. The way in which it does not affect the storyline further supports the fact that being gay is no detriment to character and is often the least interesting part of a person.
ReplyDeleteFor those who are offended by the headmaster being attracted to the same gender, I hope that you are more understanding and accepting of people in real life than you are of fictional characters.
