...saw the new James Bond movie Quantum of Solace (it kicks seriously crazy cool boo-tay!!!)
...filmed a lot of footage for a commercial that I'm making for a new client.
...played Classic Battletech and had my derriere handed to me (especially after the legs were shot off my BattleMech).
...was told during rehearsal for the Theatre Guild of Rockingham County's production of Oliver Twist that I had a great British accent and that I was channeling the perfect persona for my role as Mr. Sowerberry.
...got to meet Cecil L. Cline, the project manager for the Saturn V rocket program (he also worked on the Polaris and Poseidon missiles and the C-5A Galaxy transport plane in addition to many other engineering marvels) and received an autographed copy of his book A Soldier's Odyssey.
Not too bad a way to fill up a Saturday, eh? :-)
If you like Battletech Chris then you should try Warhammer 40,000. It's very popular.
ReplyDeleteI first saw Warhammer 40,000 a number of years ago at the Games Workshop in Concord Mills Mall near Charlotte. It doesn't just look like a neat game, the craftmanship in the pieces is a beautiful thing to behold.
ReplyDeleteThere's two reasons why I can't get into Warhammer 40K though. First, it's my understanding that to have a play-eligible army, your pieces MUST be painted. That means spending quite a lot of time not just building but meticulously decorating the various assets. And there's not much time in my schedule for that kind of activity.
The other reason, and maybe someone will try to persuade me otherwise, is that it doesn't look like there's much background motivation in the Warhammer universe except "hack and shoot". The thing that first drew me to the Battletech fictional universe many years ago is that it's greatly based on real human history and human nature, stuff that I can appreciate. But like I said, if someone can convince me that Warhammer is worth another look, I'll consider it.
The Tyranids seem pretty cool though :-)
I've been a Warhammer 40K gamer for seven years. It takes hard coin to make a decent army but it is a lot of fun both to build and to play!
ReplyDeleteWarhammer 40,000 not havign motivation?
ReplyDeleteChris, have you been under a rock? There is 11 years worth of background, novels, rule books, et el detailing why the Space Marines hate the Chaos Marines, by the Eldar can't stand the Dark Eldar, and why the Necrons hate just about everything.
Chris, 40,000 is a great universe. It's begging for an epic RPG treatment a la Planescape: Torment.
...Speaking of which Chris, have you ever played Planescape: Torment? Best book I have ever played. :)
Matt, I spent quite a bit of leisure time yesterday looking at the Warhammer 40K mythology again and I am now obligated to concur with you. That is an AMAZINGLY rich tapestry of storytelling!
ReplyDeleteLord willing that I sell the book that I'm working on, I'm going to use part of the money to buy and outfit and properly paint a honkin' BIG battalion of Space Marines! :-)
I haven't played Planescape: Torment yet but I know a few who have and they really raved about it. Guess that'll be on my list of "must play" now. Heck I haven't even taken a shot at Fallout 2 yet :-P
(And speaking of games, a Gears of War 2 review will be coming as soon as I can finally complete it. After seeing that frickin' HUGE worm yesterday I'm a bit scared as to what else is awaiting me...)
