Well, there it is: Michael Jackson's hair catching fire during filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984, in footage published for the first time by US Magazine. This is something that had grown to legendary proportions long before Jackson's death a few weeks ago. And at the time this was a huge story.
Seeing this at last, the only thought that really comes to mind is "My God..." This was a far more gruesome mishap than I can recall ever hearing it described. Amazingly, Jackson was still dancing for several seconds, completely unaware that his head was ablaze.

HOLY SMOKES!!!!!!!!!!
Okay that wasn't good.
Was this where his life went all wrong? He must have suffered for years from that accident. Not just the physical pain either. Emotional too.
Oh come, on it didn't look THAT bad.
I mean, oh, suuure, his fire was ablaze, but come on! It wasn't that ... ablaze.
Matt, did we just see the same video? I'm assuming you've never been burned for even a split second. Now multiply that by hundereds, maybe more. Did you not notice his hair that was already burned off? 2nd and 3rd degree burns and EXTREMELY painful for a long time, you develop infections and other complications. Do I believe this lead to his addictions, of course I do. I've always thought this.
During spring break of my senior year of high school, I was severely burned on one arm. It was an accident involving a blowtorch.
I didn't need hospitalization, but... it was still bad. Second and third degree burns. To this day I sometimes have nightmares about it. That kind of sensation, you do NOT ever want to have to experience. Many years later and the scars are still there, and probably will be for the rest of my life.
Even knowing what it's like to receive this kind of a burn on a fairly localized area, I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to receive that same kind of injury across the wide area of a head like Michael Jackson did.
