Newt Gingrich promises permanent Moon base by 2020
That's if he's elected President, 'course (and if he wins re-election in 2016).
I love how no one actually asked "why" we don't have existing bases on the Moon. Mitt Romney was smart enough to expose in the debate the fact that Newt actually has no plans to do that, he's just pandering because he wanted votes from the Space Coast. But still, someone should call Newt out on this. The fact of the matter is that the United Nations Outer Space Treaty was put in place for lack of a better explanation to prevent a "Red Moon" by agreeing to deny a "Red, White and Blue Moon" and to keep all celestial objects international territory to prevent anyone from using it against the two superpowers. You can't own real estate in outer space, and its also illegal to sell Moon rocks, which pretty much takes the point out of companies going there ... leaving only big government to go in. And that comment about the Moon being the 51st state is pure pandering. But what upsets me is not so much Newt Gingrich's pandering but the fact that few people grasp the law or history enough to be able to laugh at what Newt says as pure fluff.
The moon is our nearest neighbor.
