It's taken twenty years, but today I finally get my wish...
Found it at Books A Million in Greensboro while out on some business this morning.
Now all we need is for someone to make a big plush Rorschach doll that goes "Hurm" when you pull the string :-P
And then, the audience at New York Comic Con got to behold something that I know for darn near certain that every Watchmen fan has been hoping and praying would make it into the movie...
Two words: "Prison Cafeteria".
And yes: Rorschach says it. We are finally going to get to hear him say the line, on the big screen.
I've a lot to do tomorrow, but I plan on spending a little time seeing if there's a theater in Greensboro that's gonna have a midnight premiere of Watchmen. It'll be worth staying up late, just to see that scene along with a few hundred other rabid Watchmen fans, and watch everyone go crazy when he says it.
And if you've read the book, perhaps it will interest you to know that this clip has a fleeting glimpse of our favorite antihero in a certain pose wielding a meat cleaver...
For $295, you can pre-order the Rorschach Grappling Gun and Mask Prop Replica Set from the movie version of Watchmen. This thing is scheduled to be released on February 25th, 2009: just in time to have the mask ready to wear for Watchmen's release on March 6th! Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the grappling gun is permanently attached to the base (and notice that both are adorned with Rorschach's symbol). Also unfortunately, the "ink blot" on the mask does not seem capable of changing shape... but as soon as real fabric can be made with heat and pressure-sensitive viscous fluids sandwiched between layers of latex, that lil' feature will no doubt come to market :-P
After all these years of saying it couldn't be done... and even that it shouldn't be done...
I guess nothing is impossible: there really is going to be a Watchmen movie. There's the proof staring right back at us: Rorschach. In the flesh. Looking exactly as he does in the graphic novel. Not only that but click-on this high-res still (which also came from Ain't It Cool News)...
This is really... well, quite astonishing. I really don't know what else to say. I wasn't quite 16 years old when I first read Watchmen and it completely blew me away. Watchmen is easily on my personal top ten list of favorite books of all time (with Number One being the Holy Bible and Number Two being The Lord of the Rings, Watchmen probably ranks ninth or tenth... but that's still good). I've probably read that book at least 20 or 30 times over the years. And from the very beginning, I have always wondered, more than anything else from this book: "what would Rorschach look like in a live-action movie?"
Well, there he is: "the abyss gazes also..." Now I just have to wonder about who in the world is going to play this psycho.
