Sci-Fi Channel is now Syfy

Sci-Fi Channel's days are numbered: on July 7th it metamorphosizes into Syfy. Which is actually pronounced just like "sci-fi", so nothing really is changing at all. If that makes any sense...

Network execs are making the move because the popular cable channel has become about much more than spaceships and monsters. The station now carries reruns of Lost, which handily defies the traditional science-fiction genre. Heck, even Sci-Fi's own Battlestar Galactica is considered by many to be more hard-edged drama than anything fantastical. And the new name is also much more marketable: "Syfy" is now a trademark, whereas a generic term like "Sci-Fi", not as much.

I like it. It looks and sounds pretty snazzy :-)

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Wait... what?

A considerable amount of e-mail coming in the last little while, the gist of all of it is that I have missed some "fraking damned spectacular television" tonight on Battlestar Galactica, which I admitted earlier that I had not watched at all, in spite of all the good word about it.

I have no idea what the heck it is that all of y'all are trying to tell me, but I suppose I'm now gonna have to break down tomorrow and get Season 1 of this show, and attempt to get up to speed :-)

(I do have Battlestar Galactica: Razor on DVD however: it was part of the swag bag from Butt-Numb-A-Thon 9 a little over a year ago. Would it be wise to watch that first?)

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA returns tonight

I must sadly admit that I have only watched two episodes of this show. And now I am wondering what I have missed, because a lot of people are telling me "Chris, WHY AREN'T YOU WATCHING THIS SHOW?!?"

I know that Battlestar Galactica is in its final stretch, and that the word on the street is that some momentous stuff happens in tonight's episode.

So... would this be worth investing some coin in getting the DVD sets of the previous seasons, in order to finally catch up on things? :-)

LOST reruns on Sci-Fi Channel in September

If you've always wanted to check out Lost but felt daunted by how far along the story is (production on Season 5 begins next month) and you don't want to chuck good money on DVD sets just yet, you're in luck. Starting on Monday, September 15th the Sci-Fi Channel will be rerunning Lost. It'll be four solid hours of Lost every Monday night, from the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 in the pilot episode on through the insane events of "There's No Place Like Home", the Season 4 finale. Plenty enough time to catch-up new viewers on things like the Others, the DHARMA Initiative, the Tailies, and all the other stuff they should know before Season 5 premieres in January 2009.
