The Big White-out of February '15

During last night and into early this morning, a huge swath of the state got blanketed with 4-8 inches of snow. Here's how it looked at my house around 7:30 this morning.

It is snowing and sleeting right now...

It's the fourth day of April.  Spring has been here for over two weeks.  And in as north-central North Carolina as you can get, it is currently snowing and sleeting...

And it's confusing Tammy something fierce.  I let her out to do her "doggie business", she took one good look at the weather and promptly turned back to the doorsteps.

"Global warming"?  My a$$ there is!

Winter Storm Khan is giving us snow today

Dear management and staff of The Weather Channel:

You probably thought this was something "cute", didn't you?

Next year, just drop the whole "names for winter storms" thing, okay? "Gandalf" was pushing it already. But not like this...

"Khaaaaaaan!!"

It's Christmas Eve and the snow is falling

Awright, so it's hard to make out in the pic... but trust me, it is snowing at my location. And at a pretty good clip too! Maybe we'll get a White Christmas. There was one in Reidsville two years ago. Where I am now, perhaps a chance for an even bigger one.

Oh yeah, no traditional Christmas post this time as in years past. May be some pretty neat stuff that I'll be putting on the blog the next few days :-)

Just blew back into town...

...after four days in beautiful and historic Norfolk, Virginia!

Seems like the only thing that I missed was the ONLY snow my area has had this entire winter!!

Ahhh well, after the past few years' worth of ice and blizzard, a little respite may be a good thing.

It snowed this morning

Eight days into spring, and it snowed this morning here in north-central North Carolina. Not only that but it was coming down at a great clip and for awhile was sticking to the ground!

Here are some photos that I took around 8:45 a.m. today...

I was flying back from a wedding in Florida several years ago, in early April. It was snowing in Greensboro then as we touched down. And I've also seen it snow on the Fourth of July in nearby Caswell County. But this is the most snow that I've seen fall this late.

Pretty, ain't it? :-)

EDIT 10:45 a.m. EST: It's now a quarter-til 11 a.m. and the snow is still falling! Not as hard as it was earlier but, it still provides a nice ambiance.

Let's conduct a weather experiment!

Just for fun (or maybe not)...

I have heard it said, since at least 1993, that if it thunders in the winter that it means snow is coming ten days later.

The first time I was told that, it was by Dad in February of that year. Exactly ten days later we had "the Storm of the Century" blizzard.

And every time since then that it has thundered during winter, we have had snow: if not precisely ten days later then very closely thenabouts.

Well, we had thunder this morning here in Reidsville, North Carolina. A lot of thunder.

So with this post as a benchmark, I'll check back in ten days from now Lord willing, and we'll see if there's any wintery preciptation :-)

It is snowing. Again.

I have decided that Winter 2010 is officially going to be recognized as "The Fell Winter".

Look it up if you've never read Tolkien :-)

22 hours without electricity

More than 43,000 people here in Rockingham County have been without power since last night because of the winter storm. The precious juice stopped flowing to my own house at just after 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening.

I've been hunkered down under four blankets and a Boy Scout sleeping bag for most of that time since, trying to stay warm.

Give it up for the lads (and lasses) of Duke Energy though! They restored electricity a short time ago to this road and from what I'm hearing, about 11,000 are still without power and hopefully they'll be back on the grid by first of the morning at the latest. So Lord willing, Rockingham County won't miss the Super Bowl "big game".

Got any weather-related stories? Feel free to post in the comments! This is gonna be one to tell the grandkiddies about!

Two and a half inches of snow this morning

And that's mostly just in the past hour. Coming down harder than it did last week about this time.

Nobody's going nowhere today.

Weather word from those in the loop...

Sources are telling me that authorities in North Carolina and Virginia are preparing for a possible 16 to 24 inches of snow this weekend.

Thought y'all would like to know.

"Thank you, Lord!"

Those were the very first words out of my mouth this morning, when I woke up and looked outside at the beautiful snow-covered landscape.

About 8 inches so far. The snow is still coming down and will do so until this evening when it's supposed to become snow and freezing rain mix.

I'm not going anywhere today. And if you have to in these conditions, please be careful out there. But I'm gonna be more than content to stay inside and gaze in wonder at the pristine white countryside.

(Well, I'm gonna do other stuff too, like reading some books etc. And I might blog a bit too :-)

But in the meantime, it's worth saying again: Thank you, Lord!

The snow is here

Has been for about an hour or so. Ground is covered. 18 inches is now said to be a strong possibility.

I'll try to post some pics on the morrow :-)

15 inches of snow coming our way

I'm holed-up in my Sanctum Sanctorum with all the essentials: lots of food, toilet paper, reading material, video games, and a bunch of Orks to paint up for Warhammer 40,000. Not to mention plenty of movies (including my blizzard tradition, John Carpenter's The Thing).

The storm headed straight toward here. May not get to dig out 'til Tuesday, if we get the temps they're calling for.

First snow of the season has finished falling

There was about 5 or 6 inches of the white stuff here at my place in Reidsville, North Carolina. To the very best of my recollection this is the biggest snowfall this early in the season in any recent memory. I mean, hey it's still autumn, at least for another day or so anyway.

Meanwhile the computer models are still calling for more snow come later this coming week. Like, around December 24th or so.

If that happens, it'll be the third White Christmas of my life. The last one was 1999 (and the one before that was 1998).

About 3 inches of snow so far...

...and it's not a fit night to be out and about if you can help it.

So I'm stayin' in, cooking pizza and watching some good movies for a snowbound evening.

I'm thinking The Shining, Misery, and The Thing :-P

It's snowing

Just started. Let's see how much we get!

12 inches of snow tomorrow? White Christmas too?!

That's what the meteorologisticians are predicting. Cold air plus a system pumping a lot of moisture up from the Gulf of Mexico. That usually means beaucoups of snow in this part of the country.

And we stand a good chance of snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well.

The bad news is that it puts a crimp in plans to see Avatar tomorrow. But if worse comes to worst I suppose I can always download it :-P

Pale horse, pale rider

A Cody, Wyoming man has been cited for "drunk driving" of sorts. Benjamin Daniels was stopped by police for "public intoxication" while riding a white horse on a busy thoroughfare during a blinding snowstorm last week. Apparently the color of his horse, combined with Daniels' lack of sobriety, the heavy traffic and the harsh weather conditions made for a potentially hazardous combination.

Ya just can't make stuff like this up, folks! :-)

First snow of the season

A photo I took a few minutes ago...

The forecast doesn't call for any accumulation this morning. But this far ahead of winter, it's no doubt a good omen. Or maybe a bad one depending on how you look at it.
