Chris finally watches THE THING (2011)

There is a tradition I never fail to keep: whenever I get snowed in and can't go anywhere, I turn down the lights and crank up the sound and watch the 1982 movie The Thing.  Maybe that says something about my baseline state of mind. John Carpenter's now-classic film of horror and paranoia at an Antarctica research base might not be appropriate viewing for when one is...

Reidsville's $30,000 monument to madness

So my hometown of Reidsville, North Carolina has decided to ultimately remove a nationally-recognized statue with more than a hundred years of history, and let it instead be replaced with a horror straight out of H.P. Lovecraft... "We'll tear your soul apart!" Brief recap: almost four years ago the Confederate monument in downtown Reidsville was toppled and smashed...

Was the real ending to John Carpenter's THE THING in plain sight all along?

John Carpenter's 1982 science-fiction horror film The Thing is one of those movies that no matter how many times you watch it over the decades, you can always spot something new that you've haven't caught before. Case in point: I had never noticed that Doc Copper has a nose-ring until almost two years ago. It's the smallish details like that which keep the debate and discussion...

The trailer for THE THING prequel (which is called THE THING)

Not crazy about the title 'cuz for a prequel to the 1982 original (which I watch every time that we're hit by a major winter storm and get stuck inside), the name of the movie oughtta differentiate itself from... well, The Thing. However that said, this trailer does make the prequel look awfully promising! The Thing opens in October. Can't wait to see it (hopefully at a midnight premiere ...

First photo from the set of THE THING prequel

The guys at /Film have come through with the first pic of the set for the as-yet-untitled prequel to The Thing: John Carpenter's classic 1982 science-fiction horror movie...That's the Antarctic research camp that the SwedesNorwegians have, before they make their icy discovery and all hell breaks loose. The prequel (scripted by Ronald D. Moore, the mastermind behind the revamped...

BLADE RUNNER and THE THING are a quarter-century old today

Twenty-five years ago today, two movies debuted in theaters: Blade Runner and The Thing.Personally, I think these are two of the most classic movies ever made. That a quarter-century later we are still debating so much about each of these films should say something about their timelessness. For what it's worth, I've never thought that Deckard was a Replicant in Blade Runner. I'm really looking forward to the definitive release of this movie on...

Now they're re-making THE THING and making a movie out of EMPIRE?!

Some days it just doesn't pay to take a look on the cultural front...Ronald D. Moore, the guy who re-created Battlestar Galactica for the Sci-Fi Channel (and did an amazing job of it from the looks of things), is now working on a remake of The Thing......which might not be an altogether bad thing. John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing was already a remake, and Moore is a pretty capable guy. But it's going to be darn awful hard to top what we saw in the...
