To everyone who was elected tonight, and to the people who voted for them:

“Sic Transit Gloria Mundi”

As Bill McKay (played by Robert Redford) asks in the final scene of 1972’s The Candidate, after all the campaigning and chicanery and compromising…

“What do we do now?”

I will be interested in seeing what the voter turnout breakdown is. Total number of votes, percentages of parties and unaffiliated, etc.

For the past ten years the Democrats have been known for one thing among all others: their hatred of Donald Trump, along with his supporters. That is the primary issue they ran on.

Trump is now a lame duck president. The Democrats have nothing else substantive to ride on. If they spend the next two years as they did with Trump’s first term, obsessed with impeaching him, they are going to waste whatever political capital they won tonight.

A few people have asked me in the last few hours what I think about the outcome of this election. “You must be disapponted!” has been the gist of a couple of them. My most honest answer is that I’m not worried. When you’ve studied history for almost all your life you see patterns that repeat. This time is no different. That does not mean that I have confidence in those whose party was the predominant winner, at all. I believe that they will hasten the breakdown of this country. Liberalism as we have come to know it cannot sustain itself over the long term. And there are too many people in this country who still love liberty too much than to give up after one election didn’t go their way.

My prediction: the Democrats/socialists who won tonight will have two years of unrestrained revelry before they are defeated in 2028. And their behavior for the next two years may be so shameful that they are kept out of high office for an entire generation or more.

Tonight was a bump on the road of history. Nothing more.
